Hitting the right note with Blair Ukes!
Back in 2022, four people with a desire to learn to play the ukulele got together and started practising.
Today, the Blairgowrie Ukulele Group boasts more than 20 members, meets twice a week, welcomes visitors from other areas, and regularly plays at events and for other groups in the town.
Jane Ward has been involved with the Blair Ukes since the start and loves how it helps to connect people.
She said: “The ukulele is a wonderful instrument. It's portable, easy to learn, fun, helps connect people and improves mental wellbeing. Age is not a barrier to learning to play.
“We started from small beginnings, meeting in each other’s houses, and have grown over the years. As well as our weekly practice sessions we also have weekly jamming sessions for those who are keen to try new songs.
“We regularly entertain in local care homes, sheltered housing, and support local activities and events, and have been doing workshops with a ukulele teacher from Glasgow who is helping us improve our performance and confidence in playing as a group.
“The group would not exist without its amazing members. Friendships, fun, and camaraderie are what it’s all about, and that comes across in our performances - it's not about how brilliantly we play but the overall package. Our reward is seeing people smiling, singing, dancing and sharing memories and moments through music. It is uplifting.”
The Blair Ukes practice at the LifePlus Church on William Street in Blairgowrie every Monday from 10am to 12.30pm. There is also a jamming group that meets on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9.30pm at St Catherine’s Hall, and on the last Wednesday of the month, you will find them playing in the Ericht Ale House.
New members and all levels of players are always welcome. If you are interested in finding out more, email blairukes@gmail.com or search for ‘Blair Ukes’ on Facebook.
